Jamestown Man Overdoses in Prendergast Library

(WNY News Now) – A 23-year-old Jamestown, NY resident is in custody following an incident at the Prendergast Library, where he allegedly assaulted an officer and provided a false identity.

On August 15th, 2023, at approximately 1:40 PM, local law enforcement and fire personnel were dispatched to the Prendergast Library at 509 Cherry St in response to a reported possible overdose. Joseph B. Trippe, 23, of Jamestown was discovered unconscious in the library’s bathroom.


Upon evaluation by emergency medical technicians it was determined that Trippe was in need of further medical attention. Trippe was set to be transported to UPMC for further assessment. However, when a police officer attempted to take Trippe into protective custody, he resisted and attempted to flee. During the struggle, Trippe allegedly struck the officer in the face with a closed fist.

With the assistance of the Jamestown Fire Department, the officer managed to subdue Trippe and take him into custody. Following his evaluation and release from UPMC care, Trippe was transported to the Jamestown City Jail.

Trippe was formally charged with Assault 2nd for his alleged attack on the officer.
Further investigation revealed that Trippe had provided authorities with a false name. Trippe was also charged with False Personation upon arrival at the Jamestown City Jail.



Trippe remains held in custody pending his arraignment in Jamestown City Court.
