(WNY News Now) – The New York State Police have unveiled a new recruitment campaign, with applications for the Trooper Entrance Exam set to open on October 23, 2023, welcoming candidates until March 4, 2024.

NY – The New York State Police recently revealed their latest recruitment initiative, marking the launch of applications for the upcoming Trooper Entrance Exam. Aspiring troopers can submit their applications starting on October 23, 2023, with the deadline for applications falling on March 4, 2024. Additionally, the last day for candidates to take the Trooper Entrance Examination is March 17, 2024.

The previous recruitment campaign, which concluded on October 1, 2023, witnessed a substantial surge in applications, totaling 12,691 individuals. Notably, the age range of 29 to 34 experienced a notable uptick in applications following the approval from Governor Kathy Hochul to raise the maximum age for applying to become a New York State Trooper from 29 to 34. This change saw nearly 3,000 individuals within this age bracket taking advantage of the opportunity. Military applicants, on the other hand, may apply up until the age of 42.

In tandem with the age adjustment, the New York State Police has also amended its tattoo policy. The policy now requires tattoos on the chest, back, or arms to be concealed by wearing a properly fitted uniform shirt or business attire, without any portion of the tattoo being visible. If any part of the tattoo is exposed when wearing the short-sleeve summer uniform, the member must opt for the long-sleeve uniform shirt with a tie. The comprehensive tattoo policy can be accessed for reference.

Demonstrating a commitment to inclusivity, the New York State Police has taken the 30X30 pledge, aiming to increase the proportion of female recruits to 30 percent by 2030.

Aspiring troopers can learn more about the application process and register for the exam at JoinStatePolice.ny.gov, with applications opening on October 23, 2023, and exam scheduling commencing on November 6, 2023.

For added convenience, the New York State Police has collaborated with Pearson VUE, providing the exam at 60 authorized testing centers within the state, more than 390 locations across the United States, and 101 military facilities worldwide. This ensures applicants can select their preferred location and date for the exam. Moreover, the computer-based testing format enhances accessibility for all interested candidates, making the process more convenient.

A study guide for the exam is available for those preparing to take the test.

The minimum exam qualifications include U.S. citizenship, an age range of 20 to 34 (with a potential one-year extension for each year of full-time military service, up to a maximum of 7 years), and a high school diploma or equivalent. Further hiring requirements can be found here.

The position offers an initial salary of $59,612 upon academy appointment, with a minimum total compensation of $98,300 after one year of service. In addition to competitive pay, recruits can anticipate comprehensive benefits and retirement packages.
