(WNY News Now) – United Way staff and supporters will be hitting the ice at the Northwest Arena on Nov. 17  for a “Curling Mix & Match” fundraising event.

Jamestown – Individuals and local businesses are invited to buy tickets to attend and observe, or to sign up as a participating team. The event will be held from 5:30pm to 8:30 pm and will feature a “Happy Hour” mixer before the competition as well as door prizes, food, and a cash bar.

This inaugural Curling Mix & Match event is being spearheaded and organized by United Way’s 2023 Campaign Chairs Rex and Michelle “Micki” McCray.

“This will be a great team building event for the staffs of local businesses who want to socialize and network while supporting a great cause,” Rex McCray said.

“It will be both a curling competition as well as an opportunity for beginners to learn the basics of curling,” he added. “Part of the reason for the deadline to register as a team is so we can structure the competition, so as not to have regular Curling League players up against first-time teams looking to learn and have some fun.”

The deadline to register a team for United Way’s Curling Mix & Match is Friday, Nov. 10. Tickets to simply attend will still be sold after that date. The Curling Mix & Match is as much an event to show up and support United Way as it is a curling competition.

“Since starting our Backyard Curling leagues at Northwest Arena, we’ve seen a continued increase in interest and popularity for the sport,” said Craig Hinderleider, Director of Operations at Northwest Arena. Appropriate for ages 18 to 80, Backyard Curling takes place on the ice, though no special equipment or skates are required. Adapted for the Northwest Arena, Backyard Curling is a low contact activity that is both social and engaging.

“We’re so happy to have an agency such as United Way utilizing our Backyard Curling as a fundraiser at Northwest Arena,” Hinderleider said. “Backyard Curling private rentals for parties and instructional play sessions are available. It can be a fun team-building exercise or activity for friends. Participants are encouraged to wear gloves and dress properly for a colder environment.

United Way of Southern Chautauqua County is currently running its 2023 Fundraising Campaign. The annual campaigns held by United Way are how funds are raised to support local nonprofits and community agencies. Last year, United Way raised more than $1.4 million — which funded 42 programs administered by 29 local agencies.

100% of donations to United Way remain in Southern Chautauqua County, and programs funded by the campaign align with United Way’s four identified Action Areas: ensuring that families are self-sufficient, everyone is ready to work, young people succeed in school, and those in need can find help.
