(WNY News Now) – New York – New York’s comprehensive initiatives are already yielding results with historic investments in public safety, a $1 billion overhaul of the mental health care system, expanded child care access, and other critical actions making profound impacts on the daily lives of New Yorkers.

In a comprehensive move towards creating a safer and fairer New York, the state has responded decisively to the rise in hate crimes and speech. Over $51 million in grant funding has been allocated to improve the safety and security of organizations at risk, complemented by the full activation of the DHSES Office of Counterterrorism. The introduction of a new telephone hotline and online reporting form empowers New Yorkers to directly report hate and bias incidents.

A landmark $347 million public safety investment, marking the largest in a generation, targets gun violence elimination, community response, and youth employment programs. Notably, there has been a 32 percent decrease in the number of individuals killed and a 25 percent reduction in shooting incidents with injury.

The state has also taken steps to address the mental health crisis, committing $1 billion over several years to transform and overhaul New York State’s mental health care continuum. This includes $30 million to expand mental health services for school-aged youth and the establishment of 26 new Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics offering immediate, walk-in mental health and substance use disorder services.

The administration has made strides in assisting the unhoused population suffering from mental illness by restoring 390 psychiatric beds and creating 50 new Critical Time Intervention care coordination teams. These initiatives, along with the establishment of Safe Options Support teams, have helped 230 individuals transition into long-term or permanent housing.

To address the influx of migrants and asylum seekers, the state has committed nearly $1.9 billion, utilizing state-owned sites as shelters and deploying over 2,100 National Guard personnel. Notably, the successful advocacy for Temporary Protected Status for individuals from Venezuela showcases a commitment to humanitarian efforts.

In making New York more affordable and livable, historic increases in the minimum wage and a $25 billion housing plan have been implemented. Investments in child care, including the Empire State Child Credit and a state workforce retention program, aim to benefit families across the state.

The state has also strengthened and expanded reproductive health care, ensuring access to medication abortion, contraception, and telehealth services. A $100.7 million investment in new funding for abortion providers and reproductive health highlights a commitment to comprehensive healthcare services.

In boosting fast-growing industries, New York has secured a $45 million investment for Micron’s historic $100 billion investment, creating 50,000 new jobs. Additionally, a $10 billion partnership for a next-generation research and development center underscores the state’s commitment to technological advancements.

The state has made record investments in public transit, saving the MTA from a fiscal cliff, ensuring safety, and advancing congestion pricing. Efforts to reconnect communities, right past wrongs, and advance transit projects like the Second Avenue Subway demonstrate a holistic approach to transportation.

To combat climate change, the state has implemented a cap-and-invest program, achieved a historic milestone in clean power delivery, and invested in clean water infrastructure. Initiatives like the EmPower+ home retrofits program and relief for high electric bills showcase a commitment to sustainable and affordable living.

A historic investment in education funding, including fully funding Foundation Aid for the first time in history, demonstrates a commitment to high-quality education. Additional investments in prekindergarten programs, school breakfast and lunch initiatives, and capital projects for SUNY and CUNY further support education.

In building a stronger, fairer health care system, the state has invested $22 billion in multi-year funding and an additional $1 billion for vital capital upgrades. Improvements to aging hospital systems and services in lower-resources communities underscore a commitment to equitable healthcare access.

Finally, the state has laid a strong foundation for a significant expansion of the legal cannabis market, with actions taken to crack down on illicit cannabis storefronts and ensure pathways for growers to reach consumers.
