(WNY News Now) – New York – Governor Kathy Hochul has revealed a series of initiatives aimed at curbing organized retail theft and safeguarding frontline retail workers, forming a pivotal component of the FY25 State Budget agreement.
Governor Hochul highlighted the success of previous strategies in reducing violent crimes and emphasized the state’s capability to reverse troubling trends. Building upon this momentum, the governor outlined a five-point plan designed to address the escalating issue of retail theft.
The first pillar of Hochul’s plan focuses on strengthening criminal penalties for individuals who assault retail workers, elevating such offenses from misdemeanors to felonies. This measure aims to deter attacks on frontline workers and reinforce the state’s commitment to their safety. Hochul expressed gratitude to Senator Jessica Spanton and Assemblymember Manny De Los Santos for their support in passing this critical legislation.
Governor Hochul also drew attention to the alarming rise in incidents involving physical force during retail theft, emphasizing the need to protect workers who risked their safety during the pandemic to serve their communities. Hochul underscored the vital role played by these individuals in ensuring access to essential goods and services, urging continued support for their well-being.
