(WNY News Now) – Bemus Point, NY – Bemus Point School District implements comprehensive plans to combat near-record high temperatures, urging parents to assist in keeping students cool and safe.
With forecasts predicting near-record high temperatures throughout the week, the Bemus Point School District is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety and comfort of its students and staff. Superintendent Joseph Reyda addressed the community with detailed plans and recommendations to cope with the impending heatwave.
To the Bemus Point Parents and Community,
We are expecting extremely warm weather throughout this week. Temperatures are predicted to be near record highs. We wanted to make you aware of the plans we have put into place to address the warm weather and also to remind you of what you can do to help.
First, our Director of Facilities, Mr. Steven Asel, and his team will be watching the forecast throughout the week and will be adjusting our building ventilation systems in the most efficient way to bring cooler air into our buildings overnight while mitigating the amount of warm air brought in during the day. Additionally, Mr. Asel will be distributing water cooler stations in both schools for students to use as needed.
There are air-conditioned areas in both schools that will be available for students and staff to use to cool off during the day. We intend to utilize these cooler spaces as needed to help those in need to tolerate the high temperatures.
Parents can also help during the next few days. Please ensure that your child is wearing light, cool, and loose-fitting clothing this week so that they can be as comfortable as possible. Have your child bring a water bottle to stay hydrated during the day. Our teachers and staff will make sure that children can refill their water bottles throughout the day as needed. Also, please talk to your children about being cognizant of how they are feeling when playing outside. If they start to feel overheated, it might be time to take a break, catch their breath, and have some water.
Please keep in mind that there will be no school this Wednesday, June 19th, in recognition of Juneteenth.
We will continue to keep you posted on any changes to our plan. Thank you for your support as we welcome summer to the Bemus Point School District!
With Respect,
Joseph Reyda, Superintendent of Schools
