BUFFALO, N.Y. (June 17, 2024) – As our region braces for an intense heatwave this week, the Western New York Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association urges caregivers and families to take extra precautions for loved ones with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Extreme heat can be particularly hazardous for those with cognitive impairments, exacerbating confusion and increasing the risk of health complications.

People living with Alzheimer’s or dementia are at heightened risk during extreme weather events due to impaired judgment and communication difficulties. The Alzheimer’s Association emphasizes the importance of proactive planning to ensure safety and comfort during high temperatures.

Key Safety Tips for Caregivers:

  • Make a Plan: Regularly check on individuals with dementia. Ensure access to air-conditioned spaces and dress them in loose, light clothing.
  • Nighttime Vigilance: Use fans and keep air conditioning on to maintain cool nighttime temperatures. Even at night, temperatures can remain high, causing discomfort and agitation.
  • Manage Behavioral Challenges: Heat can increase agitation and confusion. Address physical needs first, then provide emotional support to reduce triggers.
  • Stay Hydrated: Encourage increased water intake. Recognize signs of heat exhaustion, which can be subtle in individuals with dementia. Watch for symptoms like fatigue, dry mouth, and headache.
  • Stay Indoors: Avoid outdoor activities during peak heat. Utilize air-conditioned environments or public places like senior centers. If outdoor exposure is necessary, wear appropriate clothing, hats, and sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.
  • Stay Informed: Monitor weather forecasts, including humidity and air pollution levels. Seek medical attention if symptoms of dehydration, heat exhaustion, or heat stroke appear.

These steps can help prevent heat-related illnesses and keep individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia safe and comfortable. For more information, contact the Alzheimer’s Association at 800.272.3900 or visit alz.org.
