(WNY News Now) – Buffalo, NY — A heat advisory has been issued for all of western New York, effective from June 19 at 4:08 AM EDT until June 20 at 8:00 PM EDT. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo has warned of dangerously high heat index values, which could reach up to 104 degrees.

Residents are urged to take precautions against heat-related illnesses. The high temperatures and humidity are expected to create hazardous conditions for vulnerable populations.

The advisory highlights several key measures to stay safe:

  • Hydrate: Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Cool Environments: Stay in air-conditioned rooms when possible.
  • Avoid Sun Exposure: Limit time spent outside.
  • Check on Others: Ensure the safety of relatives and neighbors, particularly those most at risk.
  • Never Leave Children or Pets in Cars: Vehicles can reach lethal temperatures quickly.

Hot weather can be particularly dangerous for young children, the elderly, and pets. The interior of a car can heat up to life-threatening levels within minutes, so it’s crucial to never leave anyone unattended in a vehicle.

Residents are reminded to monitor local news and weather reports for updates and additional information on the heat advisory. Taking these preventive measures can help mitigate the impact of the extreme heat.
