Uncovering a Trail of Theft: DEC Calls for Public Assistance

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is reaching out to the public for help in identifying the rightful owners of stolen trail cameras. These thefts, dating back to 2016, have primarily affected Southern Genesee County and Northern Wyoming County. In a breakthrough, DEC’s ongoing investigation has led to the recovery of numerous trail cameras.

The DEC’s Environmental Conservation Police Bureau of Environmental Crimes Investigation is keen to connect with individuals who may have fallen victim to these thefts. If you suspect your trail camera was stolen in this region since 2016, you are encouraged to come forward. Lieutenant Kevin Thomas is the point of contact for potential victims. Those affected should provide a description of their stolen camera, its last known location, and a serial number if available.

To report a stolen trail camera, email Lieutenant Kevin Thomas at kevin.thomas@dec.ny.gov with the necessary details.
