An 18-year-old girl faces serious charges after allegedly injuring an innocent bystander during a shooting incident in Buffalo’s Emerson neighborhood.

Cecelia Medina, also known as Cecelia Speed, was arraigned yesterday morning on multiple felony charges, including Attempted Murder in the Second Degree and Attempted Assault in the First Degree. Medina, who has no permanent address, was presented before Buffalo City Court Judge Phillip Dabney, Jr.

The charges stem from an incident on June 22, 2024, at around 3:20 p.m., when Medina allegedly fired several shots from an illegal handgun into an occupied vehicle on the 1600 block of Bailey Avenue near Pullman Place. Although the vehicle’s occupants were unharmed, a 53-year-old woman standing near her apartment window was struck by the gunfire. She is currently hospitalized with a gunshot wound to her lower abdomen.

Responding officers reportedly saw Medina fleeing the scene with a gun, which was later recovered along her path. The handgun, loaded and equipped with an extended magazine, has been submitted for further testing.

Authorities allege that Medina attempted to deceive police by providing a false name and altered birthdate during booking. She was held without bail and is scheduled for a felony hearing on June 28, 2024. If convicted, she faces up to 25 years in prison.

Acting Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane commended the Buffalo Police Department for their swift action and emphasized the community’s need to report illegal firearms. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Timothy J. Garvin of the Major Crimes Bureau.
