(WNY News Now) – A tornado watch has been issued for multiple counties in Central and Western New York, creating potential severe weather conditions for residents this evening.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo, NY, has issued Tornado Watch 517, effective from July 10 at 4:19 PM EDT until 9:00 PM EDT. This watch includes nine counties across Central and Western New York, signaling the possibility of severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes.

Affected Areas: In Central New York, the tornado watch encompasses Cayuga, Jefferson, Lewis, and Oswego counties. In Western New York, the watch covers Allegany, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, and Wayne counties. Major cities within these counties, including Auburn, Canandaigua, Fair Haven, Geneseo, Lowville, Newark, Oswego, Rochester, Watertown, and Wellsville, are urged to stay alert and prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions.

Safety Measures: Residents in the affected areas should remain vigilant and have a plan in place should a tornado warning be issued. This includes knowing the nearest shelter locations and having an emergency kit ready. The NWS advises staying informed through local news, weather apps, or NOAA weather radios for real-time updates.

Weather Forecast: The current weather conditions conducive to tornado development include warm, moist air at the surface, strong wind shear, and instability in the atmosphere. These factors combined can lead to the formation of severe thunderstorms with the potential to spawn tornadoes.

Action Steps:

  • Stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel during the watch period.
  • Secure outdoor objects that could become projectiles in high winds.
  • Ensure your cell phone is charged and set to receive emergency alerts.
  • Review your emergency plan with family members.
