(WNY News Now) – Syracuse – A comprehensive investigation has led to the arrest and extradition of Rafael Cruz-Vazquez for the murder of Gregory Ramos-Falcon in Syracuse, NY.

On June 5, 2024, at approximately 1:43 p.m., Syracuse Police Officers responded to a Shot Spotter alert and multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting at 128 Steuben St. Upon arrival, officers found Gregory Ramos-Falcon, born November 20, 1987, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate life-saving efforts and further treatment at Upstate Hospital, Ramos-Falcon succumbed to his injuries.

Following the incident, the CID Homicide Unit launched an extensive investigation. Detectives conducted numerous interviews, canvassed neighborhoods and the city, executed several search warrants, and meticulously analyzed the evidence collected. These efforts identified Rafael Cruz-Vazquez, born December 29, 1979, as a suspect.

An arrest warrant for Cruz-Vazquez was issued on June 13, 2024. On June 17, 2024, he was apprehended by Puerto Rican authorities. Subsequently, on July 11, 2024, Cruz-Vazquez was extradited to New York by the Syracuse Police Department Warrant Squad. He is currently detained at the Onondaga County Justice Center, awaiting arraignment.

Cruz-Vazquez faces charges of second-degree murder (Penal Law 125.25) and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon (Penal Law 265.03). The investigation remains active, and the Syracuse Police Department urges anyone with additional information to contact the Criminal Investigations Division at (315) 442-5222. As are all persons accused of a crime, the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
