(WNY News Now) – BUFFALO, N.Y. – U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross announced the arrest of Melissa Olson, 45, of Randolph, NY, on charges of theft of mail by an officer or employee. Olson, a rural carrier associate for the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) assigned to the Randolph Post Office, faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles M. Kruly, who is handling the case, revealed that the USPS Office of Inspector General received a tip in May 2023 about a stolen $200 Visa gift card. At that time, USPS management suspected Olson’s involvement, as the card was used at retail locations in the Randolph area. Investigators confirmed Olson’s use of the card for purchases at these stores.

The complaint further alleges that in June 2023, Olson stole Walmart and Target gift cards from a greeting card sent through the mail. This investigation was conducted by the USPS Office of Inspector General, led by Special Agent-in-Charge Matthew Modafferi of the Northeast Field Office.

As are all persons accused of a crime, the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
