(WNY News Now) – New York – Governor Kathy Hochul has announced that flags on all state buildings will be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Saturday, July 27, in tribute to New York Army National Guard Staff Sergeant Michael S. Stone. Stone, who passed away during a training mission in Alaska, is remembered for his dedicated service.
“Our hearts are with Staff Sergeant Stone’s family during this time of mourning,” Governor Hochul said. “His nearly 20 years of service to our nation exemplify the selflessness of our National Guard members.”
A Liverpool resident, Stone dedicated 17 years to the National Guard as a heavy equipment operator, earning accolades including Soldier of the Year twice. His service medals include the National Defense Service Medal and the Humanitarian Service Medal. He is survived by his girlfriend, Loren, and other loved ones.
