(WNY News Now) – Alexander, NY – The Town Clerk of Alexander, has been arrested for allegedly stealing nearly $3,000 of taxpayer funds and falsifying town records to conceal her actions.

New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli, Genesee County District Attorney Kevin T. Finnell, and the New York State Police have announced the arrest of Shannon Tiede, the Town Clerk of Alexander, following allegations of embezzling close to $3,000 from town funds. Tiede, 40, allegedly manipulated town records to cover her tracks over a period of nearly four years.

“Ms. Tiede was entrusted to safeguard public finances but instead allegedly abused her position to steal town funds and attempted to hide her crime,” stated DiNapoli. “I thank District Attorney Finnell and the State Police for their ongoing partnership in combatting public corruption.”

District Attorney Finnell echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the office’s commitment to holding accountable those who breach public trust. “The Genesee County District Attorney’s Office is dedicated to prosecuting those who divert public funds for personal gain. I appreciate the hard work of ADA Victor Mui, the State Comptroller, and the State Police in this investigation.”

New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James added, “Ms. Tiede’s actions violated the public’s trust and demonstrated a blatant disregard for the law. I commend all involved for their efforts in addressing this deceitful act and ensuring she no longer exploits her position.”

Tiede, who has served as Town Clerk since her election in 2019, allegedly embezzled cash payments for town fees and falsified records to cover her theft. She faces multiple charges, including Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree, Falsifying Business Records in the First Degree, Forgery in the Second Degree, and Corrupting the Government in the Third Degree.

She was arraigned before Judge Mattice in Genesee County Centralized Arraignment Part and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Alexander Town Court on August 13, 2024.

The charges are allegations, and Tiede is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
