(WNY News Now) – The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is calling on all New Yorkers to contribute to wildlife research by reporting wild turkey sightings throughout August.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is encouraging residents to participate in the annual Summer Wild Turkey Sighting Survey. Interim Commissioner Sean Mahar emphasized the significance of public involvement in this wildlife initiative, noting that anyone with internet access can contribute valuable data simply by reporting their turkey sightings during outdoor activities in August.

“DEC’s Summer Wild Turkey Sighting Survey is a great opportunity for people to participate in wildlife science,” said Interim Commissioner Mahar. “Anyone with internet access can participate, simply by reporting their observations while exploring the outdoors.”

Participants are asked to record the dates, locations, sex, and ages of observed wild turkeys using an online form accessible via smartphone, tablet, or computer. The survey form and detailed instructions are available on DEC’s website.

Since its inception in 1996, the Summer Wild Turkey Sighting Survey has relied on public participation to gather crucial data. Factors such as weather and habitat changes can significantly impact turkey reproduction and populations. By collecting observations each August, DEC estimates the productivity of the turkey population and compares reproductive success across different years. The data on young-of-the-year birds, known as poults, are vital for biologists to effectively manage wild turkey populations.

Citizen science initiatives like the Summer Wild Turkey Sighting Survey foster collaboration between the public and DEC, providing essential data for wildlife management. Summary data from the survey is available on the Fall Turkey Harvest and Productivity Dashboard on DEC’s website.
