(WNY News Now) – Jamestown – A shed fire behind a Jamestown residence caused significant damage but was swiftly controlled by the Jamestown Fire Department, preventing further destruction to neighboring homes.
On the early morning of September 14, 2024, the Jamestown Fire Department (JFD) responded to a shed fire located at 140 Barrett Ave. The fire, reported at 5:18 AM, engulfed two sheds and posed a serious threat to a nearby residence at 3 N Cowden Pl.
Upon arrival, JFD personnel found the two sheds fully ablaze. Radiant heat from the fire had already melted the siding and broken windows on the back of the nearby home. The fire crews acted quickly, with Engine Company 3 immediately deploying a hose line to cool the endangered residence. Meanwhile, Ladder Company 1 worked to extinguish the sheds.
Engine Company 4 secured a water supply from a hydrant on McKinley Ave. and established a direct connection to Engine 3. The swift and coordinated response from JFD prevented the fire from spreading to the nearby house. A search was conducted inside the residence at 3 N Cowden Pl., using thermal imaging cameras (TIC) to check for any fire spread. No signs of fire or excessive heat were found inside the home.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze in approximately 20 minutes and conducted an additional 30 minutes of overhaul to ensure no remaining hotspots. There were no injuries reported, and three off-shift firefighters were called in to assist. The cause of the fire remains undetermined.
The Jamestown Police Department (JPD), Board of Public Utilities (BPU), ALSTAR, and the Department of Public Works (DPW) also responded to assist in managing the incident. The Red Cross and National Fuel were notified as part of the response effort.
