(WNY News Now) – Fredonia’s 1891 Opera House will host an exclusive screening of London’s National Theatre’s award-winning Vanya, featuring Andrew Scott in a one-man adaptation of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya, on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m.

Fredonia, N.Y. – The 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center will showcase Vanya, an Olivier Award-winning production from London’s National Theatre, on Saturday, Oct. 26, as part of its Arts in the Afternoon series. This one-man adaptation, performed by acclaimed actor Andrew Scott, presents a radical reimagining of Anton Chekhov’s classic play, Uncle Vanya.

Captured live from the West End, this groundbreaking performance features Scott, known for his roles in Fleabag and Sherlock, portraying all of the characters. The story centers on a family fractured by secrets, unspoken love, and internal conflicts, set against the backdrop of a decaying estate. In this fresh version by Simon Stephens, audiences are thrust into the heart of human emotions—hopes, dreams, and regrets—portrayed in striking detail by Scott.

Vanya earned the 2024 Olivier Award for Best Revival, and Scott’s performance has been hailed as a “masterclass in acting” by the Evening Standard. The production, filmed during its sold-out London run, will transfer to New York City for an Off-Broadway engagement in 2025. Fredonia Opera House Executive Director Rick Davis encourages local audiences to see this acclaimed performance before its March premiere in NYC, calling it “an exciting and innovative production.”
The screening will run for approximately one hour and 50 minutes, without an intermission. Tickets are priced at $15 for general admission and $10 for students. They can be purchased at the Opera House Box Office, by phone, or online at www.fredopera.org.
Assistive listening devices will be available for hearing-impaired attendees upon request. The Opera House, located in downtown Fredonia’s Village Hall, is a not-for-profit, member-supported performing arts center committed to providing high-quality, accessible programming to the community.
