(WNY News Now) – An investigation by the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office has led to new charges against a Dunkirk man after damage to county-owned property within the jail.
On October 22, 2024, the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division investigated an incident involving damage to property at the Chautauqua County Jail. The investigation revealed that Victor M. Martinez, a 26-year-old male from Dunkirk, New York, allegedly destroyed a jail-issued tablet owned by the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office.
Martinez, who is currently incarcerated, was subsequently charged with Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree for the incident. He is scheduled for arraignment at the Chautauqua County Centralized Arraignment Program (CAP). According to officials, Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree is a felony in New York State, applied when property valued over $250 is intentionally damaged.
The Sheriff’s Office has not released specific details on the damage caused or the circumstances leading up to it. The Town of Chautauqua Court will handle the case proceedings. As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
