(WNY News Now) – Syracuse, NY – A devastating fire on Burnet Avenue resulted in the death of 53-year-old David Jones on Saturday evening, despite the heroic efforts of Syracuse Firefighters and emergency responders.
Crews were dispatched at 6:03 p.m. after the Onondaga County 911 Center reported the blaze at a two-story, wood-frame, multi-family residence. Firefighters from Station 9 arrived within minutes, encountering heavy flames on the second floor and reports of a trapped individual.
Braving intense smoke and heat, firefighters located Jones unconscious in a second-floor apartment. Given the hazardous conditions, they executed a daring rescue, bringing the victim through a second-story window via a ladder. Emergency Medical Technicians from AMR provided CPR and advanced lifesaving measures before transporting Jones to Upstate University Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators have since determined the fire’s cause to be accidental, though an active investigation remains ongoing. The second floor of the building sustained significant fire damage.
Firefighters extinguished most of the blaze within 18 minutes of their arrival and fully subdued hot spots shortly after. In total, 47 fire department personnel, alongside Syracuse Police, AMR, National Grid, and the American Red Cross, contributed to the response. Fortunately, no injuries to emergency responders were reported.
David Jones, born November 1, 1971, has been identified as the fire’s sole victim. Authorities are continuing to review the circumstances of the incident.
