(WNY News Now) – An overheated lithium-ion battery pack has been identified as the cause of a structure fire in the Town of Portland, resulting in minimal damage and no injuries.

PORTLAND, NY — On December 4, 2024, at approximately 2:28 p.m., multiple fire departments were dispatched to a reported structure fire at 6996 Route 5 in the Town of Portland. Crews quickly responded to the scene to contain the blaze.

By 3:00 p.m., the Chautauqua County Fire Investigation Team arrived to assess the fire’s origin and cause. Investigators concluded that the fire was accidental, stemming from an overheated lithium-ion battery pack. Prompt firefighting efforts limited the fire to its origin area, resulting in minimal damage.

No injuries were reported, and the quick response by fire crews prevented the situation from escalating. Authorities continue to remind the public of the potential hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries, urging proper storage and charging practices to reduce risks.
