(WNY News Now) – In a creative fusion of science and music, The Park School of Buffalo’s Upper School Jazz Ensemble delivers a unique, humorous twist on the iconic ‘Bill Nye the Science Guy’ theme song, showcasing student-driven talent and innovation.

Amherst, NY, December 6, 2024 – Members of The Park School of Buffalo’s Upper School Jazz Ensemble decided they wanted to perform something uniquely special for the finale of Park’s All-School Autumn Assembly held last week Tuesday, November 26, 2024. Combining their love of science, musical composition and performance, they “banded” together (pun intended) to create an amazing rendition of the ‘Bill Nye the Science Guy’ theme song jazz! The band members feature Brody Kalls ’27 on drums, Eli Sholly ’25 on keys, Gabe Epstein ’27 on percussion, Griffin Polaske ’27 on horn, and Jay Pillai ’25 on main keys.

If anyone was looking for a visual representation of The Park School of Buffalo, this fulfills that request. The students in this video love science for the sake of learning and discovery rather than just fulfilling a graduation requirement. They wanted to cross-pollinate their academic studies with their love of music and took it upon themselves to do just that. True to Park’s educational philosophy that places students at the center of the learning process , the band created and performed this piece simply because they enjoyed the process, not just to check off an assignment box. The rendition is entirely student-driven and extremely skillful; Park senior Jay Pillai regularly plays jazz piano for Park School events and is skillful at improvisation. He also composes his own music and he arranged this homage to Bill Nye as Jay plans to study theoretical math and science in college and pursue a medical career.

We are posting the video on social media channels and hope that this video reaches Bill Nye, and that he finds it “humerus!”

The Park School of Buffalo is WNY’s only co-ed, PreK – Grade 12 and Montessori school. Park students are academically, and socially prepared problem solvers equipped with confidence, critical thinking skills, and a desire to make the world a better place. Find yourself at Park!
