Heavy Snowfall and Hazardous Conditions Expected Across Western and Central New York

(WNY News Now) – Residents of Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Erie, Genesee, Oswego, Jefferson, and Lewis Counties are bracing for a significant lake effect snowstorm beginning Wednesday afternoon and continuing through Friday. The National Weather Service has issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning as localized bands could bring 18 to 36 inches of snow, with snowfall rates reaching up to 3 inches per hour.

Winds gusting between 30 to 40 mph are expected, potentially causing tree damage and power outages. Travel is expected to be treacherous, with poor visibility, blowing snow, and deep snow-covered roads impacting the Wednesday evening, Thursday morning, and Thursday evening commutes.

Rapid Weather Changes and Travel Hazards

Lake effect snow can create highly localized weather conditions, ranging from heavy snowfall to dry patches just a few miles apart. Motorists are urged to prepare for sudden changes in visibility and road conditions.

Authorities advise against travel if possible. For those who must venture out:

  • Clear snow from vehicles before driving.
  • Drive slowly and avoid cruise control.
  • Maintain extra distance between vehicles.
  • Avoid crowding snowplows.

Stay Safe During the Storm

Residents are encouraged to follow these safety tips:

  • Shovel Safely: Dress warmly, stay hydrated, shovel small amounts of snow at a time, and take breaks.
  • Generator Use: Operate generators outdoors and away from windows. For detailed guidelines, visit Generator Safety Tips.
  • Avoid Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: If stranded in a vehicle, run the engine for 10 minutes each hour, crack windows for ventilation, and keep the exhaust pipe clear.
  • Recognize Hypothermia Symptoms: Watch for confusion, shivering, speech difficulty, and stiff muscles. Warm victims slowly and seek medical help if necessary.
