(WNY News Now) – Significant Flooding and Erosion Expected Along Lake Erie
The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a Lakeshore Flood Warning for Erie and Chautauqua counties. The warning is in effect from 10 PM tonight until 1 PM Monday, December 30.
Impacts and Locations at Risk
Residents and commuters should prepare for significant lakeshore flooding caused by a rapid rise in water levels at the eastern end of Lake Erie. The most affected areas include:
- Route 5 in Hamburg
- Buffalo Harbor and Canalside
- Dunkirk Harbor
- Other flood-prone locations along the Lake Erie shoreline
High wave action is expected to exacerbate the situation, causing extensive shoreline erosion and creating hazardous conditions.
Safety Instructions
Authorities urge the public to:
- Refrain from boating, as conditions will be extremely hazardous.
- Stay off breakwaters, piers, rock outcroppings, and beaches, as waves may be larger than they appear and can pose a life-threatening danger.
- Avoid flood-prone roads and anticipate closures and debris in affected areas.
