(WNY News Now) – Travelers and residents in Western New York brace for challenging conditions as a prolonged lake effect snow event looms, bringing heavy snowfall and gusty winds.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo has issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning for Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Southern Erie Counties. The warning is in effect from 7:00 AM on Wednesday, January 3, to 6:00 PM on Sunday, January 7, as heavy snow and strong winds are forecasted to impact the region significantly.
The prolonged weather event is expected to deliver 1 to 2 feet of snow in areas experiencing persistent lake effect snow bands, accompanied by wind gusts reaching 40 mph.
Residents should prepare for hazardous travel conditions, particularly on inland secondary roads. The NWS warns that road conditions and visibility may change rapidly during the event. The snow is expected to cause disruptions during the Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes, making travel extremely challenging.
Travelers are urged to check road conditions frequently and delay non-essential trips when possible.
Residents are encouraged to submit snow reports through the NWS Buffalo website or on social media. These updates are crucial for monitoring the storm’s progression.
