(WNY News Now) – Governor Kathy Hochul has issued a pointed statement calling on New York’s Republican congressional delegation to secure a full repeal of the federal SALT cap, citing its damaging impact on middle-class families.

Governor Kathy Hochul has intensified her push for the repeal of the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction cap, urging New York’s Republican representatives in Congress to take decisive action.

In a statement released today, Hochul criticized the SALT cap, implemented in 2018, which limits federal deductions for state and local taxes to $10,000. The governor described the policy as a financial drain on New Yorkers, estimating losses of up to $12 billion annually for taxpayers across the state.

“The New York Republican delegation owes middle-class New Yorkers a full repeal of the SALT cap,” Hochul declared. “This cap has cost New Yorkers as much as $12 billion every year since it took effect in 2018, robbing middle-class families of their hard-earned money.”

Hochul did not mince words in her criticism of congressional Republicans, stating, “Republicans have drained billions directly from the pockets of their own constituents, and now it’s time for them to deliver. No excuses. No half measures. It’s all or nothing—New Yorkers deserve a full repeal.”

The SALT deduction has long been a contentious issue in states with higher tax rates, including New York, where many homeowners and middle-income earners have felt the pinch. Advocates for repeal argue that the cap disproportionately affects blue states, while opponents claim it primarily benefits wealthier households.
