(WNY News Now) – As a brutal cold front moves in this week, the What God is Doing in Friendship NY alliance of churches is stepping up to provide warmth and support through free hat and mitten distributions and a new warming center.

FRIENDSHIP, NY – Bitter cold weather during the start of this week will be met tomorrow with distribution of nearly six dozen free hats and mittens of various sizes to Friendship area residents.

The What God is Doing in Friendship ny alliance of churches will be making the items available at the 3PM to 5PM, January 20, third Monday of the month Mission Agape food pantry distribution at the Church of God in Christ at 77 West Main Street.  Quantities distribution will be limited to one set per individual. 

CORE The Learning Center of Belmont provided the items to the churches outreach as part of its 4th Annual Hat and Mitten Drive, which included significant donations from Saputo Dairies of Friendship, and Northern Light Candles and LC Whitford of Wellsville.

Hats and mittens were distributed during the Christmas season at Friendship, Genesee Valley, Belfast, Scio, and Wellsville Central Schools, along with Gill’s Hills children’s clubs and summer camps, the Salvation Army, Elmira Psychiatric Center for the homeless population, Women, Infants and Children (WIC), The Veterans Center/Clinic, First Step Family Resource Center, Salvation Army, and Trapping Brook halfway house, all at Wellsville, ACCORD in Belmont, Hillside children’s center in Cuba, and Operation Warm Hearts in Olean.

After tomorrow’s distribution, any remaining hats and mittens will become available through notices on the What God is Doing in Friendship ny main page at https://tinyurl.com/God-in-Friendship-FB.









The alliance also is making available, upon requests, a warming center during the day on Monday-Wednesday, January 20-22 at its Mission House location in the former St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, offices and rectory at 28-32 East Main Street.

Sub-zero wind chill temperatures are forecast during the next three days.

Living room-style chairs and a sofa are at the former rectory, along with office-style space with a table and chairs which can be used with internet access for those who bring laptops or tablets.  Free snacks and food also will be available during applicable hours.
