(WNY News Now) – A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Buffalo, NY, warning of significant snow accumulation and hazardous conditions across multiple counties in Western New York. The advisory is in effect from 7 PM this evening through 9 AM EST Tuesday, January 28.
Snow and Wind: Impacts Expected
The NWS forecasts snow accumulation between 1 to 6 inches depending on location, with winds gusting up to 65 mph in some areas. This will result in blowing snow and greatly reduced visibility, making travel difficult. Residents are advised to plan for slippery roads and potential disruptions, particularly for the Tuesday morning commute.
Affected areas include:
- Monroe, Livingston, and Allegany Counties: Expect snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches, with winds gusting up to 60 mph.
- Niagara, Orleans, Northern Erie, and Genesee Counties: Anticipate 2 to 4 inches of snow, along with wind gusts reaching 65 mph.
- Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Southern Erie Counties: Snow totals could reach 3 to 6 inches, accompanied by winds up to 60 mph.
Precautions and Travel Tips
Travel may be particularly challenging, especially during the evening hours and early Tuesday morning. The NWS advises residents to slow down and exercise caution while driving, as snow-covered roads and limited visibility will create hazardous conditions. Strong winds may also lead to tree damage and power outages in some areas.
