(WNY News Now) – BUFFALO, N.Y. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Peace Bridge border crossing arrested a Venezuelan citizen wanted in Colorado for attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

On Saturday, CBP officers encountered Jose Manuel Salas-Gimenez, 27, after he was denied entry into Canada. A routine check through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) revealed an active felony arrest warrant issued by the Aurora Police Department, Colorado.

Salas-Gimenez was taken into custody and moved to a secondary inspection area, where officers confirmed his identity and verified the warrant with the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office.

“I am proud of the outstanding work of our CBP officers who are committed to keeping our country safe,” said Buffalo Port Director Gaetano Cordone. “Effectively leveraging our national law enforcement resources allows our officers to identify and apprehend these wanted fugitives.”

CBP officers processed Salas-Gimenez before handing him over to the Buffalo Police Department. He is currently held by the Erie County Sheriff’s Office as a Fugitive from Justice, awaiting extradition to Colorado.

As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
