(WNY News Now) – Spurred into action by the cancellation of the Mayville Winter Festival last month, the community has rallied together to bring it back and bigger than ever.

Mayville, N.Y. – The Chamber of Commerce anounced the cancellation of the Mayville Winter Festival in January left the community in shock. The annual event was such a cornerstone of local festivities that its cancellation didn’t even register as a possibility for many community members.

But the shock of the revelation gave birth to new life, as the community found itself filled with a newfound vigor as they worked to bring the festival back from the brink. With an unmatched determination, people throughout the community came together over the last three weeks to assemble the focal point of the Winter Festival, the Ice Castle.

Constructed with around 1,800 blocks of ice pulled from the lake, the castle is bigger and better than ever before. Towering over those passing by, the castle stands as a testament to the power of unity and communal action. From about 20 people in the core construction group and the local construction companies helping them, to the BOCES children helping the crews, to the local businesses supplying meals to the workers, to Vince Liuzzo, to sculpted twin knights to adorn the castle’s front, this has been a community project in the truest sense of the word.

The Mayville Winter Festival is now in full swing, with the Ice Castle open to the public as well as the festival’s various other activities, including sledding hills, snowman building, snowmobile rides, and more. Make sure not to miss out on the fireworks show, set to occur at 8:00 p.m. today, Saturday, February 15.

The success of the 2025 Mayville Winter Festival in the face of adversity proves that the most powerful source of energy in the area doesn’t come from Niagara Falls, but can be found within the hearts, minds, and spirit of our community.
