(WNY News Now) – United Way of Chautauqua County seeks volunteers to read to students as part of Literacy Week, happening March 31 through April 4, 2025.
Volunteers are needed to read to school children in Northern Chautauqua County as part of United Way’s Literacy Week, which will be held March 31st through April 4th.

United Way of Chautauqua County (UWCHQ) is proud to again be partnering with Chautauqua Professionals Group to bring this impactful event to classrooms in Dunkirk, Fredonia, Forestville, Brocton, Ripley and Sinclairville.
Each year, United Way’s literacy event is made possible by volunteers as well as generous local sponsors, whose gifts provide books for students to take home.
Last year, five schools took part in a single day literacy event – where more than 650 students had community volunteers read to them and 700 books were distributed to encourage reading at home.
Expanded to a full week this year, more than 1,900 students in 45 classrooms will have community volunteers read to them. With nearly three times the number of students slated for this year, many more volunteers and book sponsors are needed. Volunteers who speak Spanish and would be willing to read in Spanish are also needed for this year’s Literacy Week.
To register as a volunteer, text “readchq” to 41444 or to sponsor the event as an individual or business, text “readchqsponsor” to 41444. Deadline to register is March 21.
This year marks the 10th year of literacy events held in Northern Chautauqua County by United Way. It is also the first year being organized by the recently merged and now one countywide United Way, UWCHQ. Previously, the literacy events (some years single day events and some years weeklong events) were organized by the former United Way of Northern Chautauqua County.
