(WNY News Now) – ALBANY, NY – State Senator George Borrello has sharply criticized Governor Kathy Hochul’s executive order banning striking corrections officers from holding state and municipal jobs, calling the move “vindictive and authoritarian.”

The order follows the termination of 2,000 corrections officers who participated in labor actions. Borrello argues that these individuals were not engaged in criminal or corrupt behavior but were public servants protesting unsafe working conditions and policy failures.

“Firing 2,000 corrections officers wasn’t enough—now she’s blacklisting them from state and municipal jobs,” Borrello stated. “These men and women weren’t criminals or corrupt. They were public servants driven to the breaking point by dangerous policies and the outright disregard for their pleas for help. Now, Hochul is punishing those who stood up for their safety and their families.”

The senator further accused Hochul of using political retribution to silence dissent rather than addressing concerns over safety and staffing shortages in correctional facilities.

“To the officers impacted by this disgraceful action: you are not forgotten,” Borrello added. “I will keep fighting for you and pushing back against this abuse of power. This fight is far from over.”
