(WNY News Now) – A Wheatfield man wanted on felony warrants out of Florida was arrested Thursday morning after a brief barricade situation at his residence.
WHEATFIELD, NY — On April 10, 2025, at approximately 9:46 a.m., Niagara County Sheriff’s Deputies attempted to arrest 53-year-old Daniel Couturiaux of Wheatfield, who was wanted on two active felony warrants issued by the Daytona Beach Police Department in Volusia County, Florida.
Deputies observed Couturiaux outside his home on the 2900 block of Krueger Road and attempted to take him into custody. Authorities report that Couturiaux ignored verbal commands and fled back into the residence. A Taser was deployed in an attempt to stop him but was ineffective.
Couturiaux then barricaded himself inside the home, prompting the activation of the Niagara County Emergency Response Team. After a prolonged standoff, both Couturiaux and a second individual, 56-year-old Rebecca Smith of Wheatfield, exited the residence and were taken into custody without further incident.
Both Couturiaux and Smith were charged with Obstructing Governmental Administration in the Second Degree, a Class A misdemeanor under New York State Penal Law §195.05.
Smith was issued an appearance ticket and released from the scene. Couturiaux was transported to the Niagara County Correctional Facility, where he is being held pending centralized arraignment and extradition proceedings to Florida.
As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
