(WNY News Now) – The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for parts of western New York following heavy thunderstorms on Monday evening.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A Flash Flood Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo, New York, effective from 6:19 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. EDT on Monday, April 21. The warning covers west central Cattaraugus County and southeastern Chautauqua County.

At the time of the alert, Doppler radar indicated strong thunderstorms producing heavy rainfall across the affected areas. Flash flooding is either ongoing or expected to begin shortly.

The primary hazard is flash flooding caused by intense thunderstorm activity. Affected areas may experience rapid flooding of small creeks and streams, urban roads, highways, underpasses, and other low-lying locations with poor drainage.

Communities likely to experience flash flooding include Jamestown, Lakewood, Falconer, Long Point State Park, Busti, Gerry, Ellington, Randolph, Napoli, Celoron, Sinclairville, Bemus Point, and several surrounding towns and hamlets.

Residents are urged to avoid flooded roadways. The National Weather Service emphasizes: “Turn around, don’t drown.” Most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles. Individuals should remain aware of their surroundings, particularly near streams, rivers, and creeks, which can rise quickly and become dangerous.

Campers, hikers, and those in outdoor recreation areas are advised to avoid waterways until the threat passes.
