(WNY News Now) – A 35-year-old Jamestown man faces multiple felony charges after allegedly setting fire to his own apartment in an occupied residential building.

JAMESTOWN – A man has been arrested and charged with multiple serious offenses following a fire that occurred late Tuesday morning at an apartment building located at 401 W. 4th Street in Jamestown.

According to the Jamestown Police Department, officers from the First Platoon and crews from the Jamestown Fire Department responded to reports of an active fire at approximately 11:27 a.m. on April 29, 2025. Upon arrival, emergency personnel found a fire inside an apartment within the multi-unit building, which houses 25 occupied units.

Following an on-scene investigation, authorities determined that the fire had been intentionally set by David J. Trout, a 35-year-old male resident of the building. Trout allegedly started the fire in his own apartment before leaving the premises, potentially putting the lives of other residents at risk.

Trout was located a short distance from the scene and taken into custody without incident. He has been charged with Arson in the 2nd Degree, Reckless Endangerment in the 1st Degree, and Criminal Mischief in the 4th Degree.

He was transported to Jamestown City Jail and is currently being held pending arraignment in Jamestown City Court. As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
