(WNY News Now) – The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a Flood Warning for parts of Western New York due to excessive rainfall, with impacts expected through early Tuesday morning.

A Flood Warning was issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo at 8:40 p.m. EDT on Sunday, May 5. The warning remains in effect until 12:45 a.m. EDT on Monday, May 6, due to ongoing and imminent flooding from heavy rainfall across several Western New York counties.

The affected counties include Allegany, Cattaraugus, Erie, Genesee, Livingston, and Wyoming. Local law enforcement has already reported flooding in several of these areas. Rainfall totals between 0.75 and 1.25 inches have been recorded, with an additional 0.25 to 0.5 inches expected overnight.

The NWS warns that flooding of rivers, creeks, and low-lying areas is already occurring or will develop shortly. Drivers are urged to use extreme caution and avoid flooded roads. The agency strongly advises, “Turn around, don’t drown,” emphasizing that most flood-related fatalities happen in vehicles.

Communities and locations expected to experience flooding include Letchworth State Park, Alfred, Warsaw, Perry, Mount Morris, Attica, Arcade, Belfast, Rushford, and several surrounding towns. Campers and hikers should avoid streams or creeks.
