(WNY News Now) – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers intercepted counterfeit luxury items worth nearly $200,000 during routine inspections in Rochester, New York.
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Rochester Port of Entry recently seized a range of counterfeit designer merchandise with an estimated Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of over $198,000.
The seizures occurred over a four-day period in April, during which officers inspected several shipments containing handbags, wallets, clothing, watches, and shoes. After detailed examinations, the items were determined to be inauthentic and were seized for bearing counterfeit trademarks.
“CBP plays a critical role in protecting businesses and consumers from fraudulent items,” said Ronald Menz, Rochester Port Director. “Our officers do an outstanding job working diligently for the American consumer by stopping this illegitimate merchandise.”
CBP has the legal authority to detain and seize imported goods that infringe on registered trademarks or copyrights. These intellectual property rights must be recorded with CBP through its e-Recordation program. Additional import violations may include mislabeling, false country-of-origin claims, or health and safety risks.
Counterfeit goods are not only illegal but can also pose serious threats to public safety and national security. The trade in fake merchandise undermines legitimate businesses, affects American jobs, and often supports criminal enterprises.
Consumers found to have knowingly or unknowingly imported counterfeit items may face fines. CBP encourages the public to report suspicious imports using the agency’s anonymous E-Allegation tool, which allows users to submit tips about potential trade law violations.
To raise awareness, CBP continues its educational campaign, The Truth Behind Counterfeits, which informs consumers about the risks of purchasing counterfeit and pirated goods.
