Deputies say driver veered off roadway while impaired by drugs
(WNY News Now) – DUNKIRK, N.Y. – A Dunkirk man is facing multiple charges after allegedly driving under the influence of drugs and crashing his vehicle on Route 5, according to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office.
On June 20, 2025, at approximately 11:52 a.m., sheriff’s deputies responded to a one-vehicle property damage crash in the Town of Dunkirk. The driver, identified as 43-year-old Andrew S. Betts of Dunkirk, was found to be impaired by drugs following an on-scene investigation.
Deputies say Betts failed to keep right and moved unsafely from his lane prior to the accident. He was transported to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office for processing and was later released with traffic tickets.
Betts is scheduled to appear in the Town of Dunkirk Court at a later date to face charges of driving while ability impaired by drugs (DWAI-drugs), failure to keep right, and moving from a lane unsafely. As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
