(WNY News Now) – ELLICOTT, N.Y. — A Jamestown man faces multiple charges following a reported domestic dispute on October 4, according to the Town of Ellicott Police Department.

Police said officers responded around 12:00 p.m. to a domestic incident involving 44-year-old Merle C. Smith. It is alleged that Smith struck the victim multiple times, pulled the victim’s hair, and dragged them back toward a vehicle. Authorities further allege that as the victim managed to escape, Smith attempted to strike the victim with his vehicle while a child was inside.

Smith was taken into custody and charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Reckless Endangerment in the Second Degree.

Following his arrest, Smith was released with an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Ellicott Court at a later date to answer the charges. As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
