(WNY News Now) – JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — A Jamestown woman was arrested Monday evening after police responded to a reported shoplifting incident at Tops Markets on Washington Street.

According to the Jamestown Police Department, officers were called to the store around 5:50 p.m. on November 10 for a shoplifting in progress. Upon investigation, police determined that Donna J. Torres, a Jamestown resident, had allegedly damaged store merchandise to remove it from its original packaging and attempted to conceal the items on her person.

Police say Torres was also found attempting to hide additional merchandise to avoid paying for it. She was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Jamestown City Jail.

Torres was charged with Attempted Petit Larceny and Criminal Mischief in the Fourth Degree. She is currently being held pending arraignment in Jamestown City Court. As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
