Deputies Issue Warrant Following 2023 Investigation; Brocton Man Taken Into Custody in 2025

(WNY News Now) – The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a Brocton man in connection with a 2023 burglary in the Village of Mayville that involved the theft of a moped from a storage shed.

Deputies responded to the incident on November 18, 2023, at approximately 5:09 p.m. After gathering evidence at the scene, investigators identified James D. Mawhir, 36, of Brocton, as a suspect. Authorities later secured an arrest warrant for Mawhir on charges of Burglary in the Third Degree, Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree, and Criminal Mischief in the Fourth Degree.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, sufficient evidence was developed in the months that followed to support the warrant, which was issued in November 2025.

On November 28, 2025, deputies located Mawhir and took him into custody without incident. He was transported to the Chautauqua County Jail, where he was arraigned in the Town of Chautauqua Court on the outstanding charges. As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
