(WNY News Now) – The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, and Genesee counties, warning of lake-effect snow and strong winds through early Thursday.

BUFFALO, NY — The National Weather Service (NWS) Buffalo office issued a Winter Weather Advisory on December 30 at 11:19 a.m. EST, effective until 1:00 a.m. on January 1. The advisory covers Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, and Genesee counties.

Residents can expect lake-effect snow with accumulations of 3 to 5 inches in the most persistent snow bands today, followed by an additional 2 to 4 inches Wednesday afternoon and evening. Winds are expected to gust as high as 45 mph, creating potentially hazardous conditions on roads, bridges, and overpasses.

NWS officials caution that lake-effect snow can produce rapidly changing conditions. Visibility may be significantly reduced in some areas, while just a few miles away, conditions could remain dry. Motorists are advised to plan for slower travel and exercise caution when driving.

Authorities recommend monitoring local forecasts, allowing extra travel time, and preparing for sudden changes in weather. Residents should also ensure emergency supplies and winter safety equipment are available.
