(WNY News Now) – The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a Winter Storm Warning for multiple Western New York counties, warning of heavy lake-effect snow, hazardous travel conditions, and significant snowfall totals through Friday evening.

The warning was issued at 1:11 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31, and remains in effect until 10:00 p.m. on Friday, January 2, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Buffalo office.

Heavy Snow Forecast Across Multiple Counties

The Winter Storm Warning covers Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and southern Erie counties, with the heaviest snowfall expected in higher elevation areas. Forecasters say the Chautauqua Ridge, Boston Hills, and western Wyoming County are most likely to see the greatest accumulations.

Additional snowfall totals of 1 to 2 feet are possible as persistent lake-effect snow bands move through the region.

Travel Conditions Expected to Deteriorate

Officials warn that travel will be very difficult, particularly during periods of intense snowfall. Snow-covered roads and poor to near-zero visibility are expected at times, especially beneath heavier snow bands.

The hazardous conditions are anticipated to impact the Wednesday evening commute and could continue to disrupt travel through the end of the week.

Rapidly Changing Weather Possible

The National Weather Service cautions that lake-effect snow can be highly localized. Conditions may range from heavy snow with severely reduced visibility to relatively dry weather just a few miles away.

Drivers and residents are urged to remain alert and be prepared for rapid changes in weather, visibility, and road conditions, particularly when traveling across county lines or higher elevations.

Public Encouraged to Share Snow Reports

The NWS Buffalo office is asking residents to submit snow reports through its official website or social media channels, which help forecasters monitor conditions and improve snowfall predictions.

Residents in the affected areas are encouraged to stay informed through local forecasts, avoid unnecessary travel during peak snowfall, and allow extra time if travel is unavoidable.

The Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until Friday night, and additional updates may be issued as conditions evolve.
