(WNY News Now) – HINSDALE, N.Y. — A 49-year-old Hinsdale resident has been charged after authorities say he failed to report a lost handgun within the time required by law.

The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office reported that Andrew A. Bennett was arrested following an investigation related to a pistol permit suspension. According to deputies, the investigation revealed that Bennett had lost a handgun in 2024 but did not notify law enforcement within 24 hours, as required under New York State law.

The incident was reported on April 5, 2026, at approximately 9:44 a.m. at a residence on Fay Hollow Road in the Town of Hinsdale.

Bennett has been charged with one count of failure to report the loss of a firearm, a violation of New York Penal Law. He was issued an appearance ticket and released.

Authorities said Bennett is scheduled to appear in Hinsdale Town Court at a later date to answer the charge. As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
