(WNY News Now) – A 29-year-old Hinsdale man was taken into custody in the City of Olean and charged with petit larceny following an earlier complaint in the Town of Olean, according to the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office.

The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office reported that James A. Walton, 29, of Hinsdale, New York, was arrested on April 12, 2026, at approximately 4:24 p.m.

Deputies said Walton was located by patrol officers riding a bicycle on West State Street near 3rd Street in the City of Olean. Following the encounter, Walton was taken into custody without incident.

Authorities stated the charge of petit larceny stems from a complaint reported earlier this month in the Town of Olean. Details regarding the original complaint were not immediately released.

Walton was transported to the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office substation for processing. He was later released with an appearance ticket and is scheduled to answer the charge in court at a later date. As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
