1StopBedrooms Will Refund Consumers Who Experienced Excessive Delivery Delays, Were Charged Improper Cancelation Fees, or Received Damaged Furniture
(WNY News Now) – NEW YORK — A $350,000 settlement with a Brooklyn-based online furniture retailer has been reached following an investigation into widespread consumer complaints involving delayed deliveries, improper fees, and damaged products.
The settlement resolves allegations against Payless Furniture, Inc., which operates as 1StopBedrooms. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) received approximately 270 complaints from customers who reported excessive delivery delays, misleading return policies, and difficulty obtaining refunds.
According to the OAG, 1StopBedrooms advertised items as “in stock” with delivery timelines of around 30 days, but often failed to meet those estimates. Investigators found the company did not provide legally required notices informing customers of their right to cancel orders and receive full refunds when delays occurred.
The investigation also determined that the retailer charged customers a 15 percent “restocking” fee and additional return shipping costs on canceled or delayed orders. Some consumers received only partial refunds, while others reported receiving no refunds at all.
Additionally, customers who received damaged, missing, or incorrect items faced obstacles when seeking replacements or refunds. The company’s policy required damage reports within 24 hours, but the OAG found that 1StopBedrooms often failed to resolve complaints or provide adequate remedies. In some cases, customers were allegedly told to remove negative reviews before refunds would be issued.
As part of the agreement, 1StopBedrooms will pay $78,810.71 in restitution to 57 consumers who filed complaints with the OAG or the Better Business Bureau. An additional $206,115.37 will be made available to 232 eligible consumers who experienced delivery issues, improper cancellation fees, or defective merchandise.
The company must also pay $75,000 in penalties and $2,000 in costs to New York state. In addition, 1StopBedrooms is required to reform its advertising practices, improve transparency around delivery timelines, and comply with state laws governing refunds and cancellations.
Under New York law, furniture sellers must notify customers of delivery delays and provide options including canceling for a full refund, accepting store credit, agreeing to a revised delivery date, or selecting a different item. Refunds must be issued within two weeks of a cancellation request.
Consumers who purchased furniture from 1StopBedrooms between January 15, 2019, and January 15, 2025, may be eligible for restitution. Claims must be submitted by August 10, 2026, by emailing 1stopbedroomsclaims@ag.ny.gov.
