(WNY News Now) – BUFFALO, N.Y. — A Jamestown woman has been sentenced to probation after admitting to assaulting a federal officer while in custody at the U.S. Courthouse in Buffalo.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, 30-year-old Alyssa Sheldon was sentenced by Michael J. Roemer to one year of probation after being convicted of assaulting, resisting, or impeding a federal officer.

Federal prosecutors said Sheldon was taken into custody on May 17, 2022, following the execution of an arrest warrant. The following day, she appeared in U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York, where she was ordered remanded into the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

Authorities said that while Sheldon was being escorted back to a holding cell after the court proceeding, she attempted to escape custody. During the incident, she resisted the escorting officer, kicked him below the waist, and attempted to spit in his face.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Joshua A. Violanti.

Officials said the investigation was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Federal Bureau of Investigation as part of the Homeland Security Task Force initiative.
