(WNY News Now) – A 22-year-old Guatemalan man has pleaded guilty in federal court after prosecutors said he crashed into a U.S. Border Patrol vehicle in Wyoming County and fled, leading to a high-speed pursuit.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Ericson Vasquez-Moran, 22, of Guatemala, pleaded guilty to depredation and injury to government property, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of New York.

Prosecutors said Vasquez-Moran drove his vehicle into a U.S. Border Patrol vehicle on May 13, 2026, causing more than $1,000 in damage.

Vasquez-Moran then allegedly fled the scene, prompting a high-speed pursuit involving law enforcement agencies. Authorities later used a spike strip to disable his vehicle, prosecutors said.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Vasquez-Moran then fled on foot before surrendering several hours later. He was taken into custody.

The federal charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. The actual sentence will be determined by the court.

The investigation involved U.S. Border Patrol, the Department of Homeland Security’s Enforcement and Removal Operations, New York State Police and the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office.

The case is being prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Brendan W. Fitzgerald.

Vasquez-Moran is scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 11, 2026, before U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara.
