(WNY News Now) – ALLEGANY, N.Y. — A reported shoplifting incident at Walmart on Plaza Drive led to an arrest by the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office on October 24.

Deputies responded to Walmart at 1869 Plaza Drive at approximately 12:39 p.m. on October 24, 2026, following a report of shoplifting.

According to Sheriff Eric A. Butler, an investigation resulted in the arrest of a 41-year-old individual identified as Paul R. Smith, with an address listed on Blaine Road.

Smith was charged with petit larceny, a violation of New York Penal Law § 155.25. The sheriff’s office reported that he was processed without incident and issued an appearance ticket.

Smith is scheduled to appear in Allegany Town Court on November 19, 2026, for arraignment. As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
