WELLSVILLE – A Belmont man is charged with first-degree assault after police responded to Jones Memorial Hospital for a one-year-old child with significant head injuries, according to the New York State Police.

Police said that Shane E. Kranock, 25, may have dropped the child after changing a diaper. Police added that, although some of the injuries may have occurred by a fall, the child’s injuries are not exclusively from just a fall.

Police reported that Kranock, who was arrested Monday, was under the influence of heroin at the time of the incident.

Kranock was taken to SP Amity and processed then arraigned at the village of Belmont Court. Kranock was remanded to Allegany County Jail in lieu of $100,000 cash bail and $200,000 bond.

Allegany Child Protective Services were contacted. The child is in guarded condition at Golisano Children’s Hospital with possible significant brain injury.
